Professor Veniamin to be Guest Speaker at the Spring Retreat of the Archdiocese of Western PA (OCA)

On the weekend of June 9 and 10, 2017, Professor Christopher Veniamin will be the guest speaker at the annual Spring Retreat of the Western Pennsylvania Archdiocese of the Orthodox Church in America.

The topics for the weekend is are from the teachings of St. Silouan the Athonite.

Friday will be a retreat hosted by His Eminence Archbishop Melchizedek for the clergy of the OCA of the Western PA Archdiocese.  Professor Veniamin will address the following: “Concerning Shepherds of Souls and Spiritual Warfare.”

On Saturday, June 10, Professor Veniamin will speak on the topic of “Humility and Obedience” at Saint John’s OCA Church in Monessen, PA.  The talks will begin at 10:30 and conclude at 2:30.  The retreat is open to clergy and laity alike.  A $20.00 fee is required which includes registration and lunch.

 


Born and raised in London, England, of Greek Cypriot parents, Professor Christopher Veniamin is the editor and translator of Saint Gregory Palamas: The Homilies (2009, 2014, and 2016), and the author of The Orthodox Understanding of Salvation: “Theosis” in Scripture and Tradition (2013, 2014, and 2016). He is a spiritual child of Elder Sophrony of Essex, Professor of Patristics at St. Tikhon’s Orthodox Theological Seminary in Pennsylvania, and President of Mount Thabor Publishing (est. 2005). He is the Professor of Patristic Theology and Dogmatics in the PhD program of the Antiochian Archdiocese, of which he is also the Assistant Director. Dr. Veniamin holds his first degree in Theology from the University of Thessalonica (Greece) and his doctorate from Oxford University (England), where he studied under Metropolitan Kallistos Ware. The subject of his doctoral thesis is The Transfiguration of Christ in Greek Patristic Literature: From Irenaeus of Lyons to Gregory Palamas (1991), which he is reworking in preparation for publication in the near future.

On March 25, 2017, a retreat will be held at St. Philip’s Antiochian Orthodox Church in Souderton, PA, in which Professor Christopher Veniamin will discuss the writings of Saint Silouan the Athonite in a series of three talks.  Professor Veniamin is a spiritual child of Elder Sophrony, the founder of the Monastery of Saint John the Baptist in Essex, England.  Elder Sophrony was the closest spiritual child of Saint Silouan.

Professor Veniamin Gives Lectures As Part of Parish’s 20th Anniversary Celebration

On the weekend of January 15-17, 2017, Professor Christopher Veniamin delivered three lectures as part of the 20th anniversary celebration of Saint Peter the Apostle Antiochian Orthodox Church in Pomona, California.  Metropolitan Joseph, the Metropolitan of the Antiochian Orthodox Church of North America, presided over the festivities, and Professor Veniamin’s Lectures were a significant part of the weekend’s celebrations.

Dr. Veniamin, Professor of Patristics at St. Tikhon’s Seminary in Northeast Pennsylvania and President and Founder of Mount Thabor Publishing (2005), spoke on the topic of Salvation in the Orthodox Church in three lectures: “Metanoia: Repentance in the Orthodox Church (audio, video)”, “Hesychia: Preparation for Encounter with God (audio, video)”, and “Theosis: The Writings of St. Silouan the Athonite and Archimandrite Sophrony (audio, video)”.

A spiritual son of Father Sophrony of the Monastery of Saint John the Baptist in Essex (England), Professor Veniamin has produced an English translation of Saint Gregory Palamas: the Homilies with thorough annotations.  Mount Thabor Publishing has also published books by Archimandrite Zacharias, Professor Constantine Scouteris, and Klaus Kenneth.  Dr. Veniamin is also Professor and Assistant Director of the Doctoral Program (PhD) in Orthodox Studies of the Antiochian Orthodox Institute and Antiochian House of Studies.
