Five-Volume Set of Palamas Sermons – Thematically Arranged

In the series, Sermons by Saint Gregory Palamas, many of this great saint’s homilies have been arranged thematically, with the purpose of offering priests and church school teachers a precious resource, which will enable them to initiate their layfolk, high school and college level students into the rich Biblical tradition of the holy Fathers.

Thus, Sermons by Saint Gregory Palamas now consists of five elegant and modestly-priced booklets:

1) Mary the Mother of God – sermons on the life of the Theotokos as presented in the Bible and tradition
2) The Saving Work of Christ – sermons on the great Biblical events / feasts of the Lord
3) On the Saints – sermons on the saints of the Old and New Testament, and on St. Demetrius of Thessalonica
4) The Parables of Jesus – covers the Publican and the Pharisee, the Prodigal Son, the Second Coming, the Unforgiving Servant, the Marriage Feast, the Sower, and of Lazarus and the Rich Man
5) Miracles of the Lord – covers the Healing of the Paralysed Man in Capernaum, the Raising of Lazarus, the Healing of the Blind Men, the Raising of the Widows Child, the Healing of the Man Possessed by Devils, and the Healing of the Ten Lepers

Mount Thabor Publishing is also pleased to announce that the 800-page “Scholars Edition” of St. Gregory’s homilies, Saint Gregory Palamas: The Homilies (2009), consisting of all 63 extant sermons by St. Gregory, together with over 100 pages of detailed notes, three indexes and an introduction, will be reprinted and available for purchase in about two months’ time. This inexhaustible distillation of Biblical and Patristic wisdom retails at $79.95.

ABOUT ST GREGORY PALAMAS (1296 – 1359)

Our father among the saints, Gregory Palamas, Archbishop of Thessalonica, was a monk of Mount Athos in Greece, and later became Archbishop of Thessalonica. St. Gregory defended the age-old and unbroken tradition of Hesychasm – prayerful stillness and watchfulness – the tradition of prayer as theology. His memory is celebrated on November 14 and on the Second Sunday of Great Lent, which is dedicated to him and known as the Sunday of St. Gregory Palamas.

St. Gregory represents Orthodox theology at its most sublime. Patristic theology in the fourteenth century, of which St. Gregory is indubitably the greatest exponent, touched the very boundaries of theological expression.

St. Gregory’s sermons are among the finest in Patristic literature. In his treatment of the manifold themes contained therein, he is remarkably consistent in maintaining a balance between originality of thought and strict adherence to the tradition of his predecessors. Moreover, his genius resides in the ease with which he demonstrates, as only a master of the spiritual life can, the refreshingly practical significance of the doctrines of the Church for the Life in Christ.
