Dr. Christopher Veniamin to Speak at St. Tikhon’s Continuing Education Symposium
June 17, 2014 @ 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm
Dr. Christopher Veniamin, D. Phil. (Oxon.), Professor of Patristics at St. Tikhon’s Orthodox Theological Seminary, will offer a three-hour seminar for the annual Continuing Clergy Education Symposium, to be held at St. Tikhon’s on June 17-19, 2014.
Based on the writings of his spiritual grandfather, Dr. Veniamin’s seminar is entitled, “Spiritual Life in Saint Silouan the Athonite”, and will take place on Tuesday afternoon, June 17, at 1:00 p.m.
The presentation will examine the spiritual life of this great 20th century Athonite saint, and focus specifically on the themes of humility, peace, the will of God, and freedom. The aim of the seminar is to present something of the ethos of the Orthodox Patristic Tradition in a way that helps identify what distinguishes it from every other philosophy, religion and creed. It is hoped, moreover, that the lessons learned will be directly applicable to one’s everyday life.
Professor Veniamin is a spiritual child of Elder Sophrony of Essex, holds his first degree in Theology from the University of Thessalonica (Greece), and obtained his doctorate from Oxford University, under the supervision of Metropolitan Kallistos Ware. He is the editor and translator of Saint Gregory Palamas: The Homilies (2009 and 2014), and the author of The Orthodox Understanding of Salvation: “Theosis” in Scripture and Tradition (2013). Dr. Veniamin is also the President of Mount Thabor Publishing, which was established in 2005, and has edited and published books by Archimandrite Zacharias, Professor Constantine Scouteris, and Klaus Kenneth.
