The Hidden Man of the Heart consists of a series of presentations on the place of the heart in the spiritual life of the Christian, with special reference to the Hesychast tradition of the Orthodox Church, including two of the most influential figures in contemporary Christianity: Saint Silouan the Athonite (1866–1938) and Saint Sophrony of Essex (1896–1993). Delivered in Wichita, Kansas at the 2007 Clergy Brotherhood Retreat of the Antiochian Orthodox Christian Church, each lecture is published here in full together with its corresponding Questions & Answers.

Archimandrite Zacharias

The Very Reverend Dr. Zacharias Zacharou is a disciple of St. Sophrony the Athonite, and a member of the Monastery of Saint John the Baptist, Essex, England.

Of Greek Cypriot heritage, Fr Zacharias is the official translator of Elder Sophrony’s writings from Russian into Greek, and holds degrees in Theology from the Institute of St. Sergius in Paris, France, and the University of Thessalonica, Greece, also receiving the degree of Doctor of Theology from the latter institution for his work on the theology of Elder Sophrony, which was published in English as Christ, Our Way and Our Life: A Presentation of the Theology of Archimandrite Sophrony (2003).

Also published in English are The Enlargement of the Heart: "Be ye also enlarged" (2 Cor. 6:13) in the Theology of Saint Silouan the Athonite and Elder Sophrony of Essex (2012), Remember Thy First Love (Revelation 2:4-5): The Three Stages of the Spiritual Life in the Theology of Elder Sophrony (2010), and Man the Target of God (2016).

Archimandrite Zacharias is fluent in Greek, English, French and Russian, and is intimately familiar with the traditions of the Greek and Russian liturgical practice.

In May of 2011 Archimandrite Zacharias was awarded the honorary doctorate from Saint Tikhon's Orthodox Theological Seminary, in recognition of his remarkable contribution to the spiritual life of the Church in America.

Customer photo review of The Hidden Man of the Heart, by Archimandrite Zacharias

This work by Archimandrite Zacharias not only complements his other two works, The Enlargement of the Heart and Remember Thy First Love, it adds breadth and depth to the topics addressed in each volume.

The Hidden Man of the Heart, by Archimandrite Zacharias

This text has been a true gift and I have found it incredibly edifying to study! I highly recommend this text to anyone seeking to deepen in their relationship with Jesus Christ and understanding their heart and the passions they may struggle with! Glory to God!

The Hidden Man of the Heart, by Archimandrite Zacharias

All of these works that carry on the wisdom of St. Silouan and his spiritual children are jewels that can benefit in so many ways. Though my SF made me wait a bit to read them. Oversight is a good idea. :)

The Hidden Man of the Heart, by Fr. Zacharias

This is a more in depth treatment of the topics covered in "Enlargement of the heart", again by Archimandrite Zacharias, so it is a good idea to read that first. He deals with the theology of St Silouan the Athonite as taught to him by Elder Sophrony of St John the Baptist Monastery in Essex and enlivened by his own lived experiences of the life in Christ. This life is the way "down", the road of humility that by the healing grace thereby received, leads to the purification, illumination and perfection of the human person. It is a great book, the Kindle edition navigation works really well and it is inexpensive. I thoroughly recommend it to all interested in the Orthodox Christian teaching on salvation as the healing of man.

The Hidden Man of the Heart, by Fr. Zacharias

Father Zacharias is following in the footsteps of Archimantdrite Sofronis giving us the opportunity to benefit from books of such high spiritual value. I recommend this book unreservedly.

The Hidden Man of the Heart, by Fr. Zacharias

"The Hidden Man of the Heart" goes even deeper into the heart than "The Enlargement of the Heart" (Father Zacharias's previous book). Father Zacharias, a disciple of Elder Sophrony (see other review), has read every book on spirituality, understood them profoundly and through the grace of the Holy Spirit has written a distilled, succinct and miraculously complete explanation of the path to salvation. Through the Holy Spirit he has been able to use words which will not require a dictionary and to assemble sentences that can be followed. While the spirituality is deep and needs time -a lifetime- to understand, it is accessible. The immediacy is so powerful, that you will feel as if you have been speaking with him. He speaks of repentance that purifies our a soul and allows the Holy Spirit to begin filling it. This process brings joy and salvation.

The Hidden Man of the Heart, by Fr. Zacharias

"The Hidden Man of the Heart" is not a light read, but for serious seekers of spiritual maturity, the time spent digesting this work is well worth the effort. Personally, I would recommend beginning by reading another book by the same author, "The Enlargement of the Heart," which lays groundwork that really is needed to properly understand "The Hidden Man of the Heart." This is a work to be read and re-read, studied and returned to for a lifetime.
